Premise: Mike Enslin (John Cusack), who writes about supposedly-haunted hotels, checks into a N.Y. hotel room that has yielded 52 deaths, mostly suicides. Will he survive?
Best Part: The first few minutes in room 1408. This is the payoff of the superb set-up about the history of the room, conveyed to Enslin by the manager of the hotel, Mr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson).
Worst Part: The end -- too easy.
Formula: one part effective tension building + two parts questioning reality + one part arbitrary metaphysical rules
Verdict: First half-hour (A); Last hour (C-)
