For a first entry, here's my exception of to Johnny's view of 1408. Yes, I wholeheartedly agree, the entry is by far and away the best part of the film. And, true to form, SLJ does let slip the glory of the f word (someday I will post the exposition on "fuck" as sent to me by one of my bosses, who got it from his 70 year old Jewish mother).
Once our friendly Enslin enters the room, it is of course a one-man show in eerie. No, it's not really terror. "Saw" is gore, "Silence of the Lambs" is fear, "Se7en" and "Alien" are terror. But for a one-man show, it does the job. And perhaps it is because I can see Enslin's point of view that I like his role.
If anyone doesn't hold up its part, it's the room. It's not the end, that I would say, is the easy part. Nay, I would say that's the route that I appreciate. It's the room's little trick beforehand (sorry, no spoilers here, but those who have seen it know the part I'm talking about) that is too easy, a little too trite. Still, we are quickly moved past that nicely. And - sorry, Johnny - I did like the closer. I look at it as the room's final gasp.
All in all, in a world of "Captivity" and "Hostel," this is a nice throwback. Definitely a rental at the least, and I don't regret my $6.50.
On a different matter, I jut spent $30 on all semisolid foods (peanut butter, Haagen-Daz, hummus, and taco dip). I am Jack's embarrassing indulgence.
