John and I were able to actually visit this weekend, chat about the blog, catch up on old times, and of course take in a movie. Sure, it ended up being the 11:50 PM show of "The Bourne Ultimatum."
All in all, it was a fun ride. Our group pretty much agreed, we were entertained. The Bourne character is an intense one, with the energy consistent. And this is definitely a thrill ride, with stunts that entertain continuously.
That being said, it is two-hour chase scene. The script was probably pretty easy to write, as there are probably 50 lines of dialogue total. Nothing really new is added to the story line -- from Strathairn's first sneer and the first echoes of Albert Finney's (convincing but artificial) Southern accent through Bourne's hazy flashbacks, you know the story continues - "Who did this to Jason Bourne?" There are some inconsistencies (which John caught, and surprisingly have not made it into IMDb) - I'll leave those to John.
I just saw Matt Damon on "The Daily Show." In all fairness, he's pretty funny. Among other observations"
1) Damon read a review that said "Will someone get Greengrass a f**ckin' Steadycam?"
2) Greengrass said the next movie can be called "The Bourne Redundancy."
3) When asked about the intensity of the movie (there is a scene where Damon and Stiles look at each other via a mirror reflection while she cuts her hair), he said "We would just have a conversation, and he [Greengrass] just made it "so intense."
When someone is able to laugh at himself about this, you gotta respect it.
This is a perfect example of the movie that hit its target. Will it get an Oscar for Greengrass, Damon, Allen, or any of the other principles? No, except maybe cinematography and stunts. But will it entertain and make boatloads of money? Oh yeah.
All in all, go see it.
