Academy Awards Thoughts

(1) I guess I have to see La Vie en Rose now.

(2) Thank god that Once stars, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, won the award for best song. I think it's a travesty that the award often goes to songs that weren't even in the films. This award reverses the trend, since "Falling Slowly" has a very central role in the main characters' relationship (as does music, generally, to the story).

(3) I think the Bourne Ultimatum was the film with the second most awards after No Country. Surprising.

(4) John Stewart had his moments (like letting Irglova get to do her thanks after getting cut off by the orchestra), but I thought it was a bit crude of him to bash Ultimatum's sound editor by saying (I paraphrase) "now someone's just gotten ahead in their Oscar pool because they filled it out randomly." An unnecessary dis.

(5) Why does the "death montage" cut off at January 31? Roy Schieder died on February 10, 2008, and we didn't get to see classic images from All That Jazz, Jaws, and The French Connection. What a gyp.

(6) Could Tilda Swinton's acceptance speech have been better? She said "buttocks" and "nipples," gushed over her agent, and made fun of George Clooney's participation in Batman and Robin, all in what seemed like less than a minute. Well done!

(7) When all is said and done, Brad Bird might have more Oscars than anyone else in history.
