Another entry from our Gen-Y rep, Elise.- Nilay
Fool’s GoldWhat is an adventure without any thrills? A romance without any intrigue?
Ding Ding Ding! You’ve got it! Fool’s Gold!
So, basically the movie takes place somewhere in the Caribbean Islands, where Matthew McConaughey plays Finn, a buff treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the “Queen’s Dowry,” 40 chests of treasure that were lost during a hurricane in 1715. This obsession has caused Finn to go broke, lose his boat, and ultimately lose his wife. Then there is Kate Hudson, who plays Tess, an uptight yacht-worker who falls for Finn on spring break. After 8 years of marriage, she is finally fed up with his immaturity. Despite her repulsion of him, she realizes that he did find something that may be the key to finding the treasures whereabouts. Finn and Tess get a millionaire, Nigel Honeycutt, and his "celebretard" daughter Gemma, to contribute to their, ehmm, financing (though they do end up helping in another way, in addition to providing cash).
It would have been a good plot if they had taken the time to research it more -- it seemed like it was just slopped together like a 4th grade science project. But it isn't the actors' fault, they just weren’t very well-directed and they aren’t comedians—they aren’t going to be great at it. There’s no doubt that Hudson and McConaughey are attractive and talented. What they lack is chemistry. After working together in How to Lose a Guy in 10 days, you would think they would make a better pair. It’s like they hadn’t even shaken hands before. And don’t even get me started on the legendary 10 minutes that they spent trying to explain the history of the treasure and the all the boring clues . . . My friends and I were dozing off just listening to it. And it’s filed with bad accents, from a bad British to Jamaican and they even managed to fit a pair of gay men in there.
Some of the jokes were laughable but my friends and I spent most of the time laughing our butts off at how anyone could be as stupid as Gemma (the "celebretard"). I’m sure that McConaughey put a lot of work into this picture . . . oh wait, I mean his abs. His trainer must be beaming. Yeah, he looks nice but is it really worth the $9? The scenery is nice also, with the clear waters and the white sand but unless this is your mini-vacation for the year I really wouldn’t waste the time.

Oh, sad. I thought they were good together in "How to Lose a Guy." That was one of the very few romantic comedies I consider watchable. :(
