"The Brothers Solomon" is a comedy that is almost completely dependent on the facial expressions of its stars for laughs. While Will Forte, (one of the only remaining funny cast members of SNL), and Will Arnett (of Arrested Development fame) are exceptionally good at selling dopey looks, it's not enough to keep the ball rolling throughout an entire movie. All the jokes were signed, sealed and delivered a half hour into the movie, after which point I just wanted it to end.
The comedians play a pair of ridiculously socially inept, home-schooled brothers whose father lapses into a coma. The doctor tells them that their father had only one regret -- not having a grandchild. He also says that it's good for a coma patient to have a reason to wake up. Lo and behold, the brothers decide they've got to get someone pregnant. The problem: they have no game. Obvious comedy ensues in their trying to find a baby mama and trying to learn how to be dads. There are good jokes throughout, the kind of which would have made a bunch of good skits for SNL, but not a great movie. It's too bad Forte, who also wrote the film, wasted some of this good material on the big screen while SNL is in such desperate need of it.
