Mathew Bloch, Shan Carter and Amanda Cox of The New York Times have posted an interesting graphic tracking box office receipts from 1986-2007. Each movie is represented by a wave on a timeline that usually begins large on the left and then taper off to the right, along the advance in time (representing the diminishing weekly box office receipts for that movie). The waves are stacked up on top of each other, so the thickness of any point on the timeline represents the total box office income for a given week.
