The Best Flim-Flam Men (and a couple women!)

1. The Thomas Crown Affair. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. With a sexy-ass cast, sweet Nina Simone soundtrack, and a plot that keeps me on my toes every time I see it, The Thomas Crown Affair is undoubtedly my favorite Caper/Heist flick. Catherine Banning is my hero. (p.s. I know what her mystery drink is!)

2. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. A very close second. Aside from being a helluva tight plot, the comic geniuses in this caper are top-notch. (Steve Martin at his best.) And is there a more lovable wolf-in-sheep's-clothing than the amazing Glenne Headly?

3. The Spanish Prisoner. Tighter than a dolphin's waterhole, creepier than grandpa in his underwear. Steve Martin really shows his range!

4. House of Games. How is it that Lindsay Krause hasn't achieved super-stardom? Her vulnerability and strength make her a memorable heroine.

5. Jackie Brown. The scene in the dressing room keeps me on the edge of my seat! De Niro in an under-appreciated role.

6. Matchstick Men. The only movie where I can stand Nicolas Cage.

7. Sexy Beast. Yes Grosvenor! Yes Roundtree! Yes! Yes! YES!

8. Small Time Crooks. Aaron, you once told me (over coffee at IHOP about ten years ago) that you cannot stand Woody Allen. I believe you used the words "nerdy chimp." This flick is Woody at his nerdiest and chimpiest, so this one's for you!

9. The Great Muppet Caper. It's sad but undeniable: Big Bird does his best work on coke.

10. 21... Just kidding. I mean Ocean's Eleven.

Interesting list, Bree, to say the least. You've acknowledged already the flicks to which I would have exception (though I did think about Memento).
OK, so I have to put Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on my Netflix now, and see what this House of Games is.
Lucky Number Slevin? Really? I mean, I saw it and I didn't throw up, but a top ten? You just like Hartnett.

To your credit, The Game is dead on, probably an underappreciated Fincher flick.

Nilay, John gave me grief over some of my choices, INCLUDING The Game, thankyouverymuch!, so I revised my post. You will love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I guarantee. I am very curious what you have to say about House of Games. And yes, it's true that I'm a Hartnett fan. Did you know that I was an extra in Wicker Park?

I didn't know you were an extra in Wicker Park! I'll have to Netflix it and find you!

Love you!

Bree,

For the record, I don't remember having a conversation with you about Woody Allen ten years ago at IHOP, but then again, Mike said I once poured coffee all over my pancakes because I thought it was maple syrup, so something about that place must have an affect on me.

I apologize to you and to Woody Allen if I ever made such a comment. Although he is a nerd, I would never, now, call him a chimp. And I love Crimes and Misdemeanors, as well as several of his other films, though not Small Time Crooks.
