Golden Globes

The Golden Globe nominations came out this morning. Many are for movies I haven't seen yet, but will (Frost/Nixon, Gran Torino, Benjamin Button), so that limits my reactions. I am horrified at two nominations, though: Burn After Reading for Best Comedy or Musical (wasn't a comedy or a musical, also wasn't good); and Tom Cruise for his depiction of an evil producer in Tropic Thunder. He was god awful -- though I primarily blame the writers, not him (but that doesn't change the fact that he was unbearable to watch).

Slumdog Millionaire, unsurprisingly, got nominated for best picture. But Heath Ledger, surprisingly, was the only nomination for The Dark Knight.

To be honest, is it a surprise that Ledger was the only nom for DK? Bale's performance was good but, for me, the growl Nolan implemented for the voice of the Batman was a detraction (not Bale's fault, but impacts the role). The other roles were probably equally good (Oldman maybe being another standout for Best supporting), but the show was really Ledger's. As for Nolan himself, some decisions (the Bale growl, the length of the film, the effects on Two-Face) kept him out of the running. Mind you, I just went out and got the collector's editions of the film on DVD and Blu-Ray (I also like the band A-Ha, but I'll never try to say they are rock legends).
