It's Oscars - we have to say something

OK, so the Academy Awards are over. Not a lot of surprises - everyone loves the underdog, so they definitely would love a Slumdog. Winslet gets her trophy, though perhaps not for the role for which it is deserved (having not yet seen The Reader). Ledger gets the reward he deserved - sad that he's gone, but he would have deserved it were he still with us.

A couple interesting notes:

1) 3 awards to Indians, and practicing Bollywood filmmakers at that. A.R. Rahman is a fantastic musician, and we've known that for a decade in India. These are the first rewards to Indians that aren't honorary (Satyajit Ray got one just before he died, but not for a specific work). There may be hope for desi filmmaking yet.
2) The Oscars are like the World Series. It's entertaining and those involved are talented, but are they really the best in the world? Just for example, there are have been only 3 winners from Africa and a few from Asia (namely Japan and Taiwan) in foreign film feature. The Best Picture is almost always British or American in production, as are the actor awards. The work of Kiarostami deserves no credit? Kurosawa? Anyone from South America, South Asia, the Middle East?
